Pebble mosaic is a type of mosaic work that uses natural pebbles and arranges them in a decorative or pictorial pattern. Small, flat stones were placed by the hand into the mortar to create smooth surfaces for the Greeks to walk upon. It was used in all areas of the eastern Mediterranean, in excavated floors from the 8th and 7th centuries BC mostly for pavements only and it was the earliest type of mosaic.
The first pebble mosaics were made by artists in Greece during the 5th century BC. Initially, they had rough geometric designs but as Greek artists achieved a great degree of technical proficiency, they created designs and figures with delicacy and considerable detail. There are floors with a series of black-and-white pebble mosaic depicting mythological scenes at Olynthus in northern Greece (c. 400 BC).
Mostly, pebble mosaics floors were made using dark and light pebble patterns, but a few were made in multicolour as well, such as the magnificent floors found at Pella in Macedonia from the late 4th century BC, which displays huge figures of human and animals with impressive naturalism and grace.
Until approximately the 3rd century BC, pebble mosaics persisted as the major form of mosaic decoration. Later it began to be replaced with mosaics of cut stone cubes, or tesserae. The later mosaics were enhanced with stone tesserae chosen for color intensity and with lead or terra-cotta strips for outlining of fine details.
